Sell the turnout you can prove, not the headcount
Advertisers buy predictable attention, so pitch on demonstrated engagement, a defined number of slots and written-up results from earlier buyers. A round subscriber number creates no demand by itself.
The method
- 01
Do not assume a subscriber milestone creates advertiser demand: hitting a round number and offering what looks like a fair rate can produce no buyers at all.
- 02
Sell sponsors on reliable turnout rather than on the chance of going viral, because a sponsor buying access to your audience prefers a predictable audience to a gamble.
- 03
Write up the results you got for early cheap advertisers and use those write-ups as the pitch to advertisers who can pay properly.
- 04
Sell a defined inventory per issue, one headline placement plus a small number of secondary slots, so you can raise the headline count later rather than cramming.
- 05
Sell the sponsorship for an expensive special edition before you produce it, so the format that takes the most work is paid for in advance.
What it returned
- 10,000
Sam Klemens waited until 10,000 subscribers, priced a slot at $100 expecting takers, and got no response.
Strategy Breakdowns runs one main ad and up to three secondary ads per edition, with a plan to move to two main ads.
Katelyn Bourgoin calls Brainy Battles a heavy lift to make and confirmed she could sell ad slots in it before the first one shipped.

Three plays a week, for the phase you are in
No roundup of links, no news. Three tactics more than one builder arrived at separately, with the numbers each one returned and the disagreements left in.
