3 builders who never spoke to each other

Build the reason to come back into the product

Retention comes from a stream of activity attached to the user, something new belonging to their circle every time they open it, rather than from features asking them to maintain their own page. Visible streaks, instant correction and standing competitions do the same job, small courtesies buy forgiveness when you break something, and a feature that has turned from lead magnet into churn multiplier should go.

The method

  1. 01

Build a retention mechanic into the product itself: a visible daily streak, instant correction, or a competition to enter.

  2. 02

Retention comes from a stream of activity connected to the user, not from features that ask them to polish their own page. Give people something new belonging to their circle every time they open it.

  3. 03

Delight costs little and buys retention, faster inbound contact when something is wrong, and more forgiveness when you break something.

  4. 04

Remove a feature the moment it turns from lead magnet into churn multiplier, and add one you previously rejected the moment the economics flip the other way.

  5. 05

Make the product observable to other users so activity itself becomes the draw: a public feed of who is working on what, a leaderboard, and a contribution grid.

What it returned

  • 115

Friendster reached about 115 million registered users by 2011 on games and profile curation. Facebook made a social feed the centre of the product, giving an endless supply of new posts to react to, and Friendster's usage and registrations declined until it shut down in 2015.

  • DuoLingo counts daily streaks to hold attention, Uxcel returns corrections on the spot, and Kaggle runs themed competitions.

  • Those three gamified features shipped in phase one, with badges, streaks, goals and rewards planned next.
