Sell a small fixed-scope audit as its own product

A cheap, tightly defined review of what the buyer already has is easy to say yes to and only attracts people with a real project. Whether it should be priced or free, and whether it leads anywhere bigger, is contested.

What both sides agree on

  • Treat a gig marketplace as reach you did not have to buy, but expect the fees, the review-count arms race and the inability to differentiate your offer to cap it.

Where this splits

One member gives the audit away deliberately as a lead magnet for larger work, while the operator who sold over a thousand paid ones warns most buyers of a cheap review cannot become clients and refuses to treat it as a funnel.

Sell the audit as a paid product itself

  1. 01Charge substantially more for a review that includes the client's own search console data, and make the paperwork to hand it over as light as possible.
  2. 02Open the offer as a charity fundraiser first, so early buyers have a reason to order that has nothing to do with trusting your expertise.

Give the audit away as a lead magnet

Give away an audit of what the prospect already has as your lead magnet, since only people with a real project will take you up on it.

  1. 03Do not build a low-ticket review as a lead magnet for retainers, because most of the people who buy it cannot or should not become clients.

What it returned

  • $5

The first run asked $5 for a five minute review with everything donated to a Thai dog shelter; demand was heavy enough that Glen Allsopp shut it after 72 hours and it raised thousands of dollars.

  • 1,000

Glen Allsopp put the same offer on Fiverr and processed only a few dozen orders there, versus over 1,000 sold from a single page on his own site.

  • Glen Allsopp never had analytics access so could not tell whether he was commenting on pages that mattered, yet enough customers offered it unprompted that he believes the higher-priced version sells.

  • Glen Allsopp turned down clients who could afford the work but had too few problems to justify it, and says he never once chased a buyer proactively; the upsell only came when they asked.
