4 builders who never spoke to each other

Cut the build until one person can finish it

Reduce the first release to the single problem worth solving and treat everything else as optional, then cut again. The alternative is the version that never ships: a six-month build that dies on one flaw costs the attempt and the appetite for the next one.

The method

  1. 01

Cut the scope until one person can actually finish it, then cut it again. A shipped fragment beats an unshipped platform.

  2. 02

Cut the first version down to the smallest thing a person can genuinely use, then put it out.

  3. 03

Compress the first build to under a week, so you learn whether anyone wants it while the idea is still current.

  4. 04

Take ideas from friction you hit yourself while away from your desk, and turn one into a released product within the week.

  5. 05

Cut the first release to the single key problem and treat the rest as optional, because the alternative is never shipping.

What it returned

  • The original specification included a blog module, shop functionality and a hub aggregating every site built on it. It was reduced to a block based static site builder with custom domains, then reduced again to HTML export, and still never shipped in two years.

  • Interior AI was built from nothing in five days.

  • New mini product started the same week the idea appeared on a road trip.

  • His first product took two years on the side because it never felt feature complete, when a month would have been enough to find out whether anyone would pay.
