3 builders who never spoke to each other

Cut the onboarding steps that feel like paperwork

Make every remaining step produce something real, even where that adds friction, and move the awkward ask, connecting an account, entering a card, to the moment motivation is highest rather than after a questionnaire. Work out who the account is automatically from the email domain and name instead of asking, show installation steps specific to the platform they arrived from, and keep the rest plain enough that there is nothing to figure out.

The method

  1. 01

Cut the steps that feel like paperwork and make each remaining step produce something real, even where that adds friction.

  2. 02

Do not ask for access to someone's account minutes after they met the product. Move that step earlier, while motivation is high, and ahead of the questionnaire steps.

  3. 03

Reorder your trial so the customer performs the product's core action before you ask who they are, then gate continuation behind signup.

  4. 04

Rebuild signup so the installation steps shown are specific to whichever platform the customer arrived from.

  5. 05

Do not ask for industry at signup. Take the email domain, project name and full name and run an automated background search to classify the account, then tailor onboarding to that group.

What it returned

  • 40%

Alongside better trial messaging this took Storemapper to a consistent trial-to-paid rate above 40%

  • $1.12M

Named as a deliberate constraint behind a $1.12M-a-year AI app.

  • Transistor's flow asks for card details before the dashboard; the alternative Justin sketches lets someone name their podcast and publish an episode first, and only then prompts for a free trial signup.

  • Storemapper's crucial first step was getting its code snippet onto the customer's site, so it produced tailored install guides for the common platforms including Shopify, Bigcommerce and WordPress
