Peg a new edition to whatever just changed

A product with flat sales comes back to life when it is rebuilt around something the market has only just started caring about. Nathan Barry's design handbook was selling ten copies a month until an edition for the new phone operating system took nearly $56,000 in its relaunch month. A second launch of an existing product is also far less work than starting again.

The method

  1. 01

Revive a product whose sales have flattened by shipping a new edition pegged to a topic that is newly interesting, and launching it again.

  2. 02

Prefer a relaunch to a new launch: the second time through is smoother, less stressful and far less work.

What it returned

  • 10

The App Design Handbook sold 10 copies for $1,190 in October 2013; the iOS 7 re-launch on November 6th produced $55,960 that month, most of it on launch day

  • Burnout came from running a cohort product, launching a new course and writing two conference talks at once; the Photoshop course's second launch was easy by comparison
