4 builders who never spoke to each other
Set the price you will pay per customer first
Four operators fix the number before the spending starts rather than reacting to what the platform charges. Work out what a subscriber or customer is worth over their lifetime, derive the budget from margin, lifetime value and payback period, and set a fixed rate you will pay per head so no channel can ever exceed it. One newsletter targeted two dollars a lead on a monthly budget, started at three forty one and settled at or below the target. A low lifetime value squeezes the margin and leaves nothing to fund acquisition at all, which is a channel decision made before any campaign exists.
The method
- 01
Set a target cost per subscriber before turning on ads and hold spend there while the cost settles.
- 02
Set the price you will pay per new subscriber before you start buying growth, so no channel can ever cost you more per head than the number you chose.
- 03
Derive the growth budget from three numbers, your margin, subscriber lifetime value and payback period, instead of picking a figure that feels affordable.
- 04
Work out what a subscriber is worth to you over their lifetime before you buy any, because that number is what sets a defensible cost per acquisition and monthly cap.
- 05
Check what a customer is worth before choosing channels: a low lifetime value squeezes margin and leaves nothing to fund paid acquisition.
What it returned
- $2
Targeted $2 per lead on a $2k/month budget raised to $3k; cost started at $3.41 per lead and settled at or below $2, or over $3 once the agency fee is included
- $1
SparkLoop partner programmes work on a fixed rate per high-quality subscriber, in the range of $1 to $20 and often around $3.
- 5,000
Jon Elder calculated subscriber lifetime value first, then bought recommendations, adding over 5,000 subscribers and roughly doubling Amazon Insiders in four months.

Three plays a week, for the phase you are in
No roundup of links, no news. Three tactics more than one builder arrived at separately, with the numbers each one returned and the disagreements left in.
