Turn the room in front of you into subscribers

A business card ends in a drawer, so the ask happens while you are still standing there: describe who the list is for, type the address into your phone, and the person becomes a subscriber rather than an intention. Writing down what you discussed and emailing the next day with links about that specific problem is what makes the follow-up land.

The method

  1. 01

Ask people to join your newsletter or email course while you are standing in front of them, describing it by who it is for and what it covers, so the contact becomes a subscriber instead of a card in a drawer.

  2. 02

Skip the business card exchange and get the opt-in there and then, by asking whether you can add them to a small group of switched-on business people you are pulling together.

  3. 03

Add the subscriber while you are still standing with them, by typing the address straight into your email tool on your phone.

  4. 04

Write on the back of each business card who the person was and what you discussed, then email them the next day referring to those specifics.

  5. 05

Email every new contact one to one the following day, ask for more detail on what you discussed, and send links that address the problem they raised, ideally ones you wrote.

What it returned

  • Dunn's on-the-spot ask names the company, compliments the work, then offers a weekly newsletter written for local business owners about business and technology.
