Pick the audience whose front page you can reach

Which community can carry a launch is a decision to make before the product exists. One author aimed a design book at founders and developers rather than at designers, on the reasoning that designers are not on the aggregators, and nearly all of his launch traffic then came from there. Choosing the reader is choosing the distribution.

The method

  1. 01

Decide which audience's front page you want before you write the product, and write the product for that audience

What it returned

  • Sacha wrote his UI book for startup founders and developers rather than designers because designers do not read Hacker News; essentially all of his launch traffic came from there
