Check that people search for what you sell
Paid search only exists where somebody types the query, and both ends of that go wrong. If buyers cannot name your category there is a hard ceiling: one retailer maxed out the budget with no further traffic available, which also starved them of data, because almost everyone has seen the product and almost nobody knows the word for it. In a category everyone can name, bids are expensive and organic positions are hard to take. Nobody searches for a newsletter to read either, which is why search led channels were the weakest for one large publication.
The method
- 01
Do not expect search advertising to fill a newsletter list, because nobody types a query looking for a newsletter to read.
- 02
If buyers cannot name your product category, there is a hard ceiling on paid search. You max out the budget and there is simply no more demand to buy.
- 03
The reverse problem is just as real: in a category everyone can name, bids are expensive and organic positions are hard to take.
What it returned
Search-led channels including AdWords, Quora and Pinterest were the ones that worked least well for Morning Brew.
Almost everyone has seen a matboard and almost nobody knows the word, so Matboard and More hit the ceiling on their AdWords budget with no further traffic available, which also starved them of data.
Frames, unlike matboards, sit in a hyper competitive market with costly bids and difficult rankings.

No roundup of links, no news. Three tactics more than one builder arrived at separately, with the numbers each one returned and the disagreements left in.
