a single source, nothing corroborates it

Publish what you are learning while you learn it

You do not have to be the authority first: the person who writes the thing up is the one remembered as the expert, and a beginner explaining the step experts skip is often more useful than the expert. The gap between doing something and publishing what you learned is small, and almost nobody crosses it.

The method

  1. 01

Publish while you are still learning: a beginner writing up the step the experts assume is often more useful than the expert's own tutorial

  2. 02

If you are not the expert yet, share the journey and what you are currently learning in a form that is useful to someone else.

  3. 03

Expert status is something you manufacture by writing and teaching publicly, not something you wait to be granted.

  4. 04

Documenting a subject is what confers the authority, not having the credentials first: the person who writes it up gets remembered as the expert

  5. 05

The gap that matters is between doing the thing and publishing what you learned doing it, and that gap is small: roughly nine in ten people only consume, nine per cent act, one per cent share

What it returned

  • 2007

Chris Coyier started CSS-Tricks in mid-2007 as a non-expert and became widely regarded as a CSS authority, with a book and many interviews, by sharing more as he learned more

  • 500

His own version: two years after standing invisible among 500 peers at a conference he was invited to speakers' dinners, having published two books and blogged the whole process

  • He solved a Rails installation problem from a fellow beginner's blog after expert tutorials skipped the configuration step; Pat Flynn's audience began as exam notes he published for himself and thousands of architecture students found

  • Marco Polo was a merchant whose father and uncle had made the trip before him, and Paul Revere was one of four riders; each is remembered because of what was written
