3 builders who never spoke to each other

Say what arrives rather than the word subscribe

Subscribing is a split-second decision, so the box states what the reader gets, how often and why, and puts proof next to the field. A named person asking in their own voice beats a bare form, and one checkout opt-in rewritten this way more than doubled.

The method

  1. 01

State the reason to subscribe in the signup box itself instead of relying on the word subscribe to carry it.

  2. 02

Change the button from the generic subscribe wording to something naming what the reader gets.

  3. 03

Put social proof next to the email field: the subscriber count, the unsubscribe rate, or a reader quote.

  4. 04

Ask in the first person as a named human rather than presenting a bare form, the way video creators ask viewers to subscribe.

  5. 05

Treat subscribing as a split-second decision, which is why small psychological adjustments to the box move the number so much.

What it returned

  • 25%

Opt-in at checkout climbed from 25% of donors to 55%, more than doubling, and is conservatively credited with $400,000 a year. Donors who subscribe stay two to three times longer than those who do not.

  • A personal nudge was added to the bottom of every case study on the site

  • Glen Allsopp criticises the opt-in on Valnet's CBR as the least creative thing on a site about a creative industry, and points out how many millions of times a month it is seen, so a tiny conversion gain compounds.
