Hunt the pages that ranked fast, not the sites

Run the same young-and-ranking logic one level down: restrict a niche authority's archive to articles from three to eight weeks ago, since anything newer is still riding a temporary boost and anything older has had time to earn links. Verify the byline date against the Internet Archive before you model the page. A paid tool collapses the whole job into one filtered screen.

The method

  1. 01

Apply the same young-and-ranking logic to pages: site: search a niche authority restricted to articles from three to eight weeks ago, since anything newer is still riding a temporary boost and anything older has had time to attract links.

  2. 02

Verify a page really is as new as its byline date claims before you model it: check the Internet Archive, and open one of its images to read the upload date out of the file URL.

  3. 03

With a paid tool, filter one competitor's recently published articles by date and sort them by search traffic, which hands you the fast-ranking pages in one screen.

  4. 04

Mine a publisher that ranks on recency rather than links, because those are the queries where a brand new page is not disadvantaged.

What it returned

  • 2018

A NerdWallet article displaying a 2018 date turned out from the Internet Archive to have been published in 2017. The image URL trick works on most WordPress sites, and matched the stated July 2018 date on the article Glen Allsopp did use.

  • 99

Glen Allsopp says 99 percent of BestProducts.com rankings sit on freshness-sensitive terms such as wireless earbuds at 90,500 monthly searches and the best bluetooth headphones variant at 40,500, and that the site is carried by sitewide footer links from Esquire, Cosmopolitan and Elle.

  • Glen Allsopp says to choose a niche authority rather than a broad publisher, naming NerdWallet and Value Penguin as personal finance examples instead of Business Insider or Huffington Post. Keywords Everywhere is suggested for checking volumes without paying for a tool.

  • Ahrefs Content Explorer showed a Smashing Magazine article from late July already pulling hundreds of visitors because results for august desktop wallpaper favour fresher pages. BuzzSumo shows publish dates but reports only links and shares, not organic traffic.
