Raise the order value with bundles and add-ons

The cheapest expansion revenue is attached to an order the customer is already placing: a one click upsell inside checkout, an accessory that completes the job, two of your own products sold together above either price but below their sum. Bundling several small tools into one subscription also raises the cost of leaving. Where the buyer resists paying for the digital part, take a cut of the physical goods and services they need anyway.

The method

  1. 01

Bundle two of your products at a price above either one alone, so the headline saving is real while your revenue per customer goes up.

  2. 02

Create an add-on that customers can attach to the order they are already placing, as the cheapest route to expansion revenue.

  3. 03

Sell related items together as a bundle to lift the size of the average order.

  4. 04

Put a single-click upsell inside the checkout flow rather than emailing the offer afterwards.

  5. 05

Bundle several small tools into one subscription rather than selling a single point product, because the bundle raises the cost of leaving.

What it returned

  • $249

Tailwind UI at $249 and Refactoring UI at $149 were sold together for $279, a $120 saving at a price higher than either product on its own.

  • $15

Zue's table cards add-on, the first new Place Card Me offering since launch, sold five times for $15 in under a week, money he says he would otherwise never have made.

  • 13

Ring introduced product bundles and average order value went up 13 percent.

  • 21

Protalus put a one-click upsell on its insole checkout page and sales went up 21 percent.
