Model a domain move as a partial transfer
Folding one site into another is a routine move for large publishers, and it works: pick the higher-traffic domain as the destination even if the other has the better name, list where the two already have near-identical articles, give unmapped URLs a real alternative or a proper 404, and confirm the staging site is gone. Rankings do not transfer article for article, and for a small site they may not come back at all.
Where this splits
Glen Allsopp documents publishers consolidating domains as a repeatable and often sensible play, while Cory Zue moved one product to a new domain and its search traffic never recovered, leaving him warning against ever doing it.

Consolidating domains works if you plan the transfer carefully
Glen Allsopp
- 1Buying an established site and redirecting it into a folder on your main domain is a real acquisition play, but rankings do not transfer article for article, so model it as a partial transfer rather than a move.
- 2Before you redirect an acquired site, list the topics where the destination already has near-identical articles, because those pages end up competing with each other once merged.
- 3Folding several overlapping sites into a single domain is a repeatable move for large publishers, not a last resort, and even a brand new domain can be the target.
- 4Pick the higher-traffic domain as the destination when consolidating two sites, even if the other one has the better name.
- 5Shut down or block your staging site as part of a migration, and confirm with a site: search that none of its pages are still crawlable.

Never move a domain, search rankings may never return
Cory Zue · Glen Allsopp
- 1Before spinning a category onto its own domain, check the category actually belongs to your brand, since the spin-off can peak early and then halve.
- 2Never change the domain of a product that runs on search traffic; the rankings may simply not come back.
What it returned
- 1
BuzzFeed's Complex redirected SoleCollector, averaging roughly 1.3M monthly Google visitors per Ahrefs, into complex.com/sneakers. SimilarWeb estimates put SoleCollector at around 59% of traffic from organic search and Complex at around 66%. Glen Allsopp says people privately ask him the odds of a positive return on exactly this move.

Glen Allsopp also flags differing domain authority, pages that were never performing on the original site, and URL structure changes: SoleCollector's /news/jordan-luka-2 became a Complex URL carrying an extra folder plus the author's name.
- 2022
At the end of 2022 DotdashMeredith retired three sibling domains, TheBalanceCareers.com, TheBalanceSMB.com plus TheBalance.com, each estimated by Ahrefs at a million or more monthly Google visitors, into the previously unused TheBalanceMoney.com. Google sends over 500 million clicks a month to the 49 DotdashMeredith sites Detailed tracks.
Parents.com carries traffic in the millions while Parenting.com had been in slow decline, which Glen Allsopp names as the likely reason the redirect ran in that direction.

No roundup of links, no news. Three tactics more than one builder arrived at separately, with the numbers each one returned and the disagreements left in.
