Take the card before the trial, or after it
Asking for card details up front collapses the visitor to trial rate several fold, and the operators who dropped it saw signups multiply. The counter measurement is that most of those extra signups never buy, so with manual onboarding you inherit a much larger support load for a marginal gain in paying accounts. Around the edges there is agreement: a fortnight is enough trial for anyone who will convert, and warning people before the charge lands costs less than the refunds that follow a surprise.
What both sides agree on
- Default to a 14-day trial with no usage cap, add limits only if abuse becomes a problem, and let sales or support extend it by hand while asking what the person is trying to accomplish with the extra time.
- Add a trial once you notice that paying is the only way for anyone to see what the paid features do.
- Warn people before the trial converts. Being upfront about the charge date costs less than the refunds and chargebacks that follow a surprise.
Where this splits
Jackson reports dropping the card requirement multiplying trial signups, while Tringas tried it both ways and went back to demanding a card because the extra trials were not buyers.

Drop the card requirement and let more people trial
- 01Asking for a credit card before the trial collapses your visitor-to-trial rate; drop the card requirement and that rate should sit at 5% or better.
Require a card at signup to filter trials
After experimenting both ways, go back to demanding a card at signup: it costs you some trials and a few paid signups, and is still worth it for the hassle avoided.
