Sell a fixed ten minute audit as a product

Turn the repeatable checklist into a cheap productised service: a fixed time budget split between clicking the site, running site queries and a short crawl, delivered as a recording hosted on a page you control. Budget it on mental capacity rather than clock hours, warn the buyer not to act on everything at once, and log the advice you keep repeating, because that log is the next product.

The method

  1. 01

Fix a repeatable time budget for a short paid review and stick to it: most of the time on the site itself, a couple of minutes in search results, a couple of minutes in a crawler.

  2. 02

Kick the crawler off before you hit record, and throttle it to one or two URLs a second so you are not locked out mid-delivery.

  3. 03

Choose a screen recorder that lets you start the next take while the last one is still rendering, because the wait is where your focus goes.

  4. 04

Cut the scripted opening from a recorded deliverable once customers tell you it is eating the time they paid for.

  5. 05

Host each delivered video on a page you control instead of an unlisted YouTube link, so the finish of the deliverable can carry your next call to action.

What it returned

  • 99

Glen Allsopp recorded 99 percent of orders in Screenflow on a Mac and found Camtasia's forced five minute wait between takes broke his rhythm; he names Quicktime as the free fallback.

  • 30

Glen Allsopp ran a 30 second intro for roughly his first 750 videos before enough buyers complained about it that he dropped it, saying it also felt robotic ten times a day.

  • Glen Allsopp split ten minutes into roughly five minutes clicking through the site, two to three minutes on site queries in Google and about two minutes in Screaming Frog.

  • Glen Allsopp has had his IP banned while recording an audit, which he calls awkward, and lists Deep Crawl, Content King, Ahrefs and Sitebulb as alternatives to Screaming Frog.
