Start an interview show to open closed doors

An interview request is a reason for someone with a large following to say yes to a stranger, and you come out of it with a relationship rather than a favour owed. Run deliberately, the show also manufactures the domain knowledge that lets you see unmet demand in a category, which outsiders cannot. The podcast is the excuse; the network is the product.

The method

  1. 01

Use interview requests as the entry point to people with big followings - a podcast gives you a reason they'll say yes to, and you come out of it with a relationship.

  2. 02

Look for unmet demand only inside categories you already understand, since outsiders can't see the opportunity - and manufacture that understanding deliberately by interviewing people you admire on a podcast, going to meetups and conferences, and running experiments you publish.

What it returned

  • Transistor came out of decades of podcasting, shipping products, building an audience and working in public.
