Track the actions you control, not the follower count

Log every post with its date, link, format and your own score for how it landed, and track distribution weekly as simple yes or no checkboxes on the things you control. Keep follower and impression numbers to a separate monthly review, and look at performance by day and format rather than weekly totals, because the pattern that matters is usually invisible in the aggregate.

The method

  1. 01

Log every post you publish in a spreadsheet with the date, the live link, the format used, and your own score out of ten for how well it landed.

  2. 02

Have the sheet calculate the reuse dates automatically at six, twelve, eighteen and twenty-four months out, and republish the high scorers when those dates arrive.

  3. 03

Track distribution as yes or no checkboxes on the actions you control weekly, and keep the follower and impression numbers as a separate monthly review against last month.

  4. 04

Give the audience goal a number and a deadline so it can be tracked like any other target.

  5. 05

Look at content performance by day and format rather than weekly totals: personal stories outperformed instructional posts by double, and the pattern was invisible in the aggregate.

What it returned

  • 1

Welsh fills in a formula-driven Notion sheet daily and grades that day's post from 1 to 10; Google Sheets works the same way.

  • 500

The team target was moving from 500 to 5,000 followers inside 365 days.

  • Welsh considers half a year a long enough gap to repost something that performed well.

  • Weekly checks cover whether the post, the thread and the newsletter went out; the monthly review compares tweets, impressions, profile visits and followers with the previous month and asks what to change.
