2 builders who never spoke to each other

Collect the trade's vocabulary before writing a word

Spend time in the forums, groups and reviews where buyers talk to each other, and write down the phrases they use for the problem and for the fix. Reusing that vocabulary in ads, posts and the home page makes the copy read as though it came from inside the trade rather than from a vendor. Writing five hundred words about the buyer's working day, before any page exists, is a compact way to bank the language.

The method

  1. 01

Pick up the vocabulary an industry uses about itself while you read its forums, so that what you write later sounds like it came from inside.

  2. 02

Collect the exact words customers use for the problem and the solution, then reuse that vocabulary in your ads, your posts and your home page so it catches their eye.

  3. 03

Write out five hundred words on your ideal customer's working day and the exact circumstances in which the problem bites, then reuse that vocabulary in your site copy and ads.

What it returned

  • 500

The exercise is a 500 word summary of their daily life, business problems, and the context around the problem you intend to solve, which then feeds positioning and every piece of communication.

  • Along with the jargon, he says you also come away knowing which products and solutions members of the group recommend to each other.
