4 builders who never spoke to each other

Tighten the headline until only your segment fits

Push the specificity past the point where it feels risky, because the fear of shutting out the wider market is what produces lines nobody sees themselves in. Name the exact buyer, the exact result and the method that gets them there, then keep narrowing as you learn which segment actually converts. Broadening back out to cover more uses makes it unclear what you do and demand falls with it.

The method

  1. 01

Rewrite a broad tagline so it names the exact buyer, the exact result and the mechanism you use to get there.

  2. 02

Build the positioning line out of four fixed components: company stage, industry, the numeric range you move them through, and the concrete method.

  3. 03

Push the specificity of your offer past the point where it feels risky, because the fear of losing the wider market is what produces copy nobody sees themselves in.

  4. 04

Judge any offer wording against two questions: can a reader tell immediately who it is for, and can they tell immediately what they will end up with.

  5. 05

Keep tightening the headline on your homepage toward the exact segment that converts, rather than leaving it at the level of the whole industry.

What it returned

  • 2019

Welsh replaced a 2019 line about helping SaaS companies grow revenue with one naming early-stage healthcare SaaS firms, scaling from $1M to $10M, via proven growth playbooks.

  • $1M

The four parts Welsh identifies in his own line are early-stage, healthcare, $1M to $10M, and proven growth playbooks.

  • 2020

Glen Allsopp tracked Rankings.io moving from a generic promise of first page rankings for law firms, to naming elite personal injury firms in 2020, to leading with personal injury lawyers in 2023. He reads the narrowing as where they were converting best.

  • Welsh applies both tests to a coaching tagline about helping leaders lead with impact and drive success, and shows that leaders could mean the head of IBM, a middle manager, an author or a florist, while the promised outcome could be a raise, better hires or team morale.
