Put a live count on the page

Numbers that move make a page feel occupied rather than abandoned: who just signed up and how many people are reading, how many rooms are genuinely left, how many items a roundup covers and how many are currently discounted. It works only when the count is real, and it needs enough volume that the figure looks busy rather than embarrassing.

The method

  1. 01

Show live signup and viewing activity on the page itself once you have enough traffic for the numbers to look busy.

  2. 02

Show the real remaining count on the page when your inventory can genuinely run out.

  3. 03

Show the reader at a glance how many products a roundup covers and how many of them are currently on sale.

What it returned

  • He calls the Fomo snippet, which surfaces who just signed up and how many people are on the page, essential for any site with a reasonable amount of traffic.

  • Booking.com displays how many rooms are left and puts the number in red, which Katelyn Bourgoin reads as pushing browsers to commit before the choice disappears.

  • NY Mag's Strategist, a Vox Media property, does both, which Glen Allsopp suspects lifts conversion by attaching urgency to the count.
