4 builders who never spoke to each other

Narrate the build from the first commit

Post the unfinished thing as you make it: screenshots after a work session, progress from the first hour, the in progress version rather than the reveal. Watching a thing get made pulls people into the outcome, so by the time there is something to sell you are already in their feed and some of the watchers have become advocates.

The method

  1. 01

Show the in progress version of what you are building, since watching the process makes an audience feel involved in the outcome.

  2. 02

Document the attempt publicly from the first day, because people follow a journey as it happens rather than a finished result, and the audience keeps you accountable.

  3. 03

Building in public is close to free promotion: after a two-hour work session post a screenshot of what you made, and some of the people who follow along turn into advocates and introductions, though the Twitter version of this is now very crowded.

  4. 04

Tweet your progress from the first hour of work and keep posting updates through the whole build, to accumulate awareness, curiosity and feedback before there is a product.

  5. 05

Post while you build rather than building first and posting later, so that people are already paying attention by the time the product starts working.

What it returned

  • $1,000

Goutham Jay took Famewall to $1,000 MRR while building it in public.

  • Jurn tweeted about Screely one hour after he started and posted regular updates while building the MVP.

  • He had no audience at all while building the first Tweet Hunter release, and the little he did post was enough to stay visible.

  • Went from the first line of code to the Reddit front page.
