3 builders who never spoke to each other

Spend the effort on the line they read first

Most visitors decide from what is on screen before they scroll, so the headline and the opening sentence deserve disproportionate work and everything after them is downstream. Keep the first line short, and make each line hand off to the next so the reader slides rather than stops. A template editor is a trap for exactly this reason, since it lets you spend the afternoon on appearance and minutes on the words.

The method

  1. 01

Spend disproportionate effort on the headline, since most visitors decide from what is visible before any scrolling.

  2. 02

Spend the most effort on the opening line and keep it short; if it is skipped, nothing after it gets read.

  3. 03

Make each line hand off to the one below it so the reader slides through the page without stopping.

  4. 04

The template editor is a trap: it lets you spend almost all your time on appearance and almost none on the subject line and the writing, which is the hard part

  5. 05

Lead with the conclusion your reader is waiting for rather than your thinking or your behind-the-scenes context, because volume of information is not the same as answering the question.

What it returned

  • 80

As many as 80 percent of visitors never get past the fold.

  • 95%

His estimate is 95% of the time going on getting the design right and 5% on subject and content

  • A nurse sent Welsh six or seven updates about traffic and cross streets that morning and never once gave the arrival time, which was the only thing he needed.
