Plan the revenue mix across product types

Independent income tends to arrive from several lines at once, and the shares are not what people expect: courses and paid communities carry it while an ebook contributes almost nothing. Decide the intended split in advance, across products, software and productised consulting, rather than discovering it afterwards. Where one line refuses to sell however you push it, monetise the same traffic another way instead of continuing, and remember that scaling an information product business means an endless sequence of launches.

The method

  1. 01

Spread independent revenue across a course, a paid community and a book, but expect the course and community to carry it while the ebook contributes almost nothing.

  2. 02

Plan a deliberate revenue mix across product types instead of one line - roughly half from books, courses and workshops, a quarter from software, a quarter from productised consulting sold as fixed coaching calls.

  3. 03

Understand that scaling an information-product business means an endless sequence of launches or heavy spending on staff, automation and webinars, with margins falling as you grow.

  4. 04

If your own courses will not sell, stop pushing them and monetise the same traffic through affiliate reviews and tutorials of tools you personally use.

  5. 05

Sell narrow kits at low prices as separate products instead of bundling everything into one course.

What it returned

  • 2016

Justin's 2016 split was 55% from the Marketing for Developers course, 20% from the MegaMaker Club membership and 9% from the Jolt ebook; in 2017 the course made $75,000, the club brought in $54,000, Tiny Wins added $44,000, and Jolt managed $1,300.

  • 2016

Justin's stated 2016 target split, with the consulting quarter sold as one-hour coaching calls for startups.

  • $300,000

Nathan Barry walked away from a book and course business doing close to $300,000 a year to focus on ConvertKit, which had brought in roughly $39,000 during 2014, about eight times less.

  • $10,000

Courses never sold for One Hour Professor whatever was tried, in what the founder calls a hypercompetitive internet marketing space. The portfolio now turns over about $10,000 a month with roughly $8,500 profit, mostly from affiliate and AdSense income.
