Start the meetup or show you wish existed

Running a podcast, a local meetup or a weekly roundup gives you a standing reason to approach people several steps ahead of you and an audience at the same time. Keep the format minimal and the cadence public, and let the guests supply the relationships, the content and the education.

The method

  1. 01

Start the meetup you wish existed, keep the format minimal, invite a handful of people from your field, and commit publicly to a monthly cadence.

  2. 02

Use a podcast as the pretext for conversations with people you could not otherwise reach: pick a subject you care about and invite people who care about the same thing.

  3. 03

Start a podcast interviewing people who have built what you want to build; it produces the relationships, the audience and the content ideas at the same time.

  4. 04

Start an interview podcast as a way to build relationships with working practitioners a few steps further along than you, then copy what you see them doing.

  5. 05

Rehearse new workshop material at a free Meetup event before charging for it, then scale up to paid events and bigger rooms.

What it returned

  • 10

Kevin and Jared's Nerds Night Out dropped the presenter entirely in favour of drinks at a pub, began with a few invitations to local web developers, and grew to between 10 and 25 people a month.

  • Justin notes that some of the best hosts he knows are not naturally outgoing, so introversion is not a barrier.

  • Justin and Kyle Fox's Product People brought them into contact with Hiten Shah, Nathan Barry and Ruben Gamez, attracted an audience, and generated ideas for posts, for episodes, and for workshops run live.

  • Justin's Product People podcast introduced him to Nathan Barry, Sacha Greif and Brennan Dunn, plus Jarrod Drysdale and Rob Walling and also Paul Jarvis - all fresh from self-publishing, which prompted him to try it himself.
