Set the dial on how much you share
Building in public is not all or nothing: you choose the level of disclosure, and that choice selects who follows you. Regulatory and competitive limits set the ceiling, a monthly summary and near hourly updates are both legitimate, and the one thing that works at every setting is sharing your experiments, your decisions and the inputs you control rather than headline outcomes.
The method
- 01
Treat building in public as a dial you set, not an all or nothing commitment. You decide what is safe to share, and sharing selectively is still building in public.
- 02
How openly you share selects who follows you, so pick a level of disclosure that attracts the audience you want rather than the one others demand.
- 03
Let regulatory and competitive constraints set your limit. A fintech handling private financial data cannot share what an open source dev tool can.
- 04
Posting cadence does not decide legitimacy. A monthly general update and near hourly updates from inside the work are both viable ways to run it.
- 05
The one form of sharing that works across every style of building in public is posting your experiments, your decisions and the inputs you actually control, rather than headline outcomes.
